Sparkling sterling silver jewellery have been a part of human attire since time immemorial. Nose rings in particular have fascinated younger to older generations for decades now.

But have you ever wondered what metal is most suitable when it comes to nose rings?

Sometimes we are so taken in by the intricacy of design, that we forget about the quality of metal we are putting on our skin. Many times we are seduced for nose rings made of this alloy metal called sterling silver.

But is sterling silver good for nose rings? Is it a safe option to invest in?

Read on further to make an informed choice when it comes to your nose rings.

What sort of a metal is sterling silver?

Sterling silver metal

Sterling silver is an alloyed metal composed of 92.5 % of silver and 7.5 % of copper. This amalgamation makes the metal harder and more durable, increasing its chances of sustenance by several notches. However, the downside of this alloy is that it is prone to tarnishing at a faster rate.

Most people confuse between sterling silver and real silver, know the difference here.

Does the metal suffice in all conditions?

During humid conditions, a layer of black or brown metal might get formed on the surface of the metal, however, it’s easy to clean the tarnish and reuse it for a long duration of time. The metal can also react with the fistula of a freshly pierced skin and can leave a dark spot making one feel uncomfortable.

Does it cause skin infections?

Sterling silver nose rings might contain certain percentages of nickel that will have a near to zero impact on the skin. But not all jewellery made of this alloy will have nickel blended into it.

Your skin reacts to sterling silver, if your skin is super sensitive.

Sensitive skin types can experience mild reactions to the alloy metals. Hence, one must be well aware of the nature of their skin while using sterling silver nose rings.

Is sterling silver good for normal skin types?

When it comes to normal skin types sterling silver nose rings can be a fair option for occasional and party wears.

But do not aim to wear this metal in case you want to sport it for all twenty-four hours of the day.

Sterling silver on fresh nose piercings

Sterling silver is not good for fresh nose piercings. The alloy has a tendency to tarnish and might leave a dark mark. This gets further accelerated when it comes in contact with the lymph from a new piercing.

Wearing sterling silver nose rings can cause irritation and staining on a freshly pierced nose as it oxidizes when it comes into contact with body tissues and fluids.

Sterling Silver on a healed nose piercing

Sterling silver is a fair choice for a healed nose piercing provided you are not wearing it all day everyday. Also the metal is a bit on the heavier side making it difficult to sport it for sustained periods.

So is sterling silver a good choice ? It really depends on your skin type and the jewellery wearing rituals you follow.

What is Lorem Ipsum? Lorem Ipsum is simply dummy text of the printing and typesetting industry. Lorem Ipsum has been the industry's standard dummy text ever since the 1500s, when an unknown printer took a galley of type and scrambled it to make a type specimen book. It has survived not only five centuries, but also the leap into electronic typesetting, remaining essentially unchanged. It was popularised in the 1960s with the release of Letraset sheets containing Lorem Ipsum passages, and more recently with desktop publishing software like Aldus PageMaker including versions of Lorem Ipsum. Why do we use it? It is a long established fact that a reader will be distracted by the readable content of a page when looking at its layout. The point of using Lorem Ipsum is that it has a more-or-less normal distribution of letters, as opposed to using 'Content here, content here', making it look like readable English. Many desktop publishing packages and web page editors now use Lorem Ipsum as their default model text, and a search for 'lorem ipsum' will uncover many web sites still in their infancy. Various versions have evolved over the years, sometimes by accident, sometimes on purpose (injected humour and the like).
